USA Archery Board Elections For 2007
There is good news and bad news. The USOC and the NAA (now let's call us/them by the right name:) USA Archery are moving quickly towards resolving the crisis in the organizational operations. There has been a problem revealed regarding the possible embezzlement of funds, the elections have NOT been on track for the national target's annual meeting (they were suspended till October at the soonest to allow for a new nominations process), and there are a lot of personal emotions and politics in play. Some might say that the "old guard" and the "new guard" are in outright feud, at just the wrong time for the olympiad cycle. But is there ever a wrong time for getting things "straight"? READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE BY FOLLOWING THIS LINK. Also, thank you very much to Texan Jennifer Comedy-Holmes (see the AOTY awards below) for volunteering to serve on the nominating committee. There are several interesting threads on the Archery Talk website: Link 1 Link 2. that speak to current issues.

AOTY? YAOTY?
The TSAA identifies and honors the "Archer of the Year" for adult compound and recurve, male and female archers each year, based on their performance in TSAA tournaments. This year the board has added a YOUTH Archer of the Year honor as well. The AOTY and YAOTY honorees will receive a plaque and the youth archers will also receive a $25 gift certificate to Lancaster Archery. Congratulations to ALL!

The Texas State Archery Association (TSAA) Archer Of The Year (AOTY) for 2007 are:
Compound Ladies - Megan Lesak (corrected 8/8/2007)

Compound Gentlemen - Joseph Human
Recurve Ladies - Jennifer Holmes
Recurve Gentlemen - Staten Holmes

The TSAA AOTY is determined by results from the three state championships: indoor, field and outdoor. Any member of the TSAA can compete for this prize as long as they shoot the adult distances.

The four divisions are: compound ladies, compound men, recurve ladies and recurve gentlemen.

Ranking: The winner of each division gets 25 ranking points. Each point below the winner gets 1/10 of a point deduction from 25. For example: if John shoots 1000 and Smiddy shoots 995, then John gets 25 ranking points and Smiddy gets 24.5 ranking points. You only need to rank at two of the three state championships. You may compete in all three if you wish but your lowest ranking gets thrown out.

Thanks go again to Rick Stonebraker for compiling all of the stats and identifying the AOTYs.

The Texas State Archery Association (TSAA) Youth Archers Of The Year (YAOTY) for 2007 are:

Bowman Compound Ladies - Jessica Tomlinson
Bowman Compound Gentlemen- Hunter Barthels
Bowman Recurve Ladies - Miriam Trafford
Bowman Recurve Gentlemen - Shawn Faidly
Cub Compound Ladies - No award *
Cub Compound Gentlemen- Thomas Human
Cub Recurve Ladies - Rachel Trafford
Cub Recurve Gentlemen - No award *
Cadet Compound Ladies - Coral McMinn
Cadet Compound Gentlemen- Benjamin Human
Cadet Recurve Ladies - Megan Knowlton
Cadet Recurve Gentlemen - Tyler Janota
Junior Compound Ladies - Meagan Lesak
Junior Compound Gentlemen- Joseph Human
Junior Recurve Ladies - Simone Petrosky
Junior Recurve Gentlemen - Jordan Brown

* There were no archers that shot the required three events.

The TSAA YAOTY is determined by results from the five TSAA state championships; indoor JOAD, indoor, field, JOAD target and target. Any member of a TSAA JOAD club can compete for this prize as long as they shoot the entire event and compete in the minimum three events. Ranking is performed in the same manner as the AOTY.
THANKS go again to Tom Barker for compiling all of the stats and identifying the youth archers of the year.

To view the actual numerical rankings, you can use these links to the pages on the TSAA website: AOTY YAOTY

Hosford Funds Are Avaliable to Texas Archers
Does your Texas archery program need seed capital to get things going? TSAA can help.

The Texas State Archery Association (TSAA) is pleased to offer its member organizations the opportunity to submit grant application proposals for consideration. Grant proposals are due to the TSAA secretary by December 31. Announcement of successful applications will be done at the TSAA state indoor tournament. By submitting a grant application to the TSAA, the leader of the organization (Grantee) that will propose and sponsor the program must attest that the proposal has credibility and that the organization will comply with all expectations of the TSAA.

More information can be found in the invitation at this link...

25th Annual Texas State Archery Association Target Championship
The results for the TSAA Target Championship have been posted at this link...

The event was held at the huge Town and Country Optimist Sport Complex , owned by the Austin Town and Country Optimist Club, on July 21 & 22, 2007. The original venue in Lago Vista was flooded by Lake Travis so a switch at the last minute was necessary. It rained a lot on Friday PM and Saturday morning, and periodically throughout the Saturday shooting (Texas is having heavy rains and frequent flooding all over, in some cases 15 inches+ falling in just 10 hours). Sunday was calm and foggy to begin with but blue skies appeared around the start of the final distance, and the variable winds that were blowing into the archers' faces on Saturday were completely calm for most of the day on Sunday. As witnessed by the number of state records (Thirty-three!) and Star FITA National records (12) the conditions were decent enough for the archers to have a good time, although soggy feet and shoes were the rule.

Many photos are also posted, use the same link above...

Great Archery Items On This Website
Target Archery by Kleanthes Koniaris
*
Angles and Archery. We attempt to model archers of various disciplines and compare them, head to head, despite the fact that they don't shoot upon common targets. (We also study the scoring benefits of "fat" target arrows.)
*
Mechanical Release Devices and the Compound Bow. The literature that describes the release devices used with compound bows is usually very poor, non-general, and filled with mystical nonsense in many cases ("back tension"); however, release devices are simple if properly explained.
*
Aiming with Both Eyes Open. Ideally, one should aim an Olympic target bow (or air pistol, air rifle, etc.) with both eyes open. The resulting "ghost" images seen by many people (including me) can be confusing, but they are easy to understand (and ultimately ignore).
*
Free Archery Targets. Everybody likes free archery targets that can be printed on a nearby color printer. The novel thing about my free targets is that they contain an overlay of grid lines spaced by 1moa. These targets can only be used correctly at their rated distance, but provide a very powerful tool for the analysis of groups of arrows.
*
Matching Arrow Weights. If one fires arrows with differing weights, they will land at different heights upon the target. Given reasonable vertical tolerances, weight matching turns out to be extremely important, to a degree that seems excessive (at first).
*
What's a "1300-level" FITA shooter? Shooting 1300 (out of 1440) is an incredible milestone for any archer, but exactly what does it mean?
