Youth archers came from the south (Cameron, Victoria, Goliad and Calhoun counties), from the west (Lavaca and Colorado counties, San Antonio and Austin) and from the North (Brazos and Fort Bend county and Houston) to join the host Matagorda County archers to shoot in the second annual kids only Texas State JOAD indoor championships in Bay City, Texas. Special recognition to the Cameron County archers that drove all the way from the valley to come play and also a special note about Holly Heinsohn who competed in Fort Worth in the IBO winter nationals on Friday, drove to Bay City Saturday morning and then drove back to Fort Worth Saturday evening so she could finish her 3D round on Sunday. Now there is a dedicated archer!  (and Holly placed first in the Youth Female Division at the IBO Winter Nationals (some prefer to call it the 'windy nationals').

There were a total of 69 archers that enjoyed the relatively mild weather for the indoor championships. Jack Milchanowski and Rick Stonebraker were kind enough to give up their weekend to come judge the tournament. In addition to judging, they and some of the others helped the new kids learn the ropes on NAA rules. In addition, all the experienced kids helped make the new ones feel welcome and everyone went away with some new friends. A dedicated group of parents helped get the arena torn down and back to normal in record time and the organizers really appreciated the help.

While a handful will also journey north to shoot the TSAA adult tournament in Fort Worth next week, most are already looking forward to the Indoor Nationals at A&M and the state indoor 4H match in March (which will be back at this same venue in Bay City).

As everyone arrived for the tournament the buzz was all about the loss of the Columbia space shuttle. But, like most Americans, the kids persevered and life went on.
