From Tournament Organizer/DOS Tom Barker:
The tournament was sponsored by the Victoria Parks and Recreation Department and
hosted by the South Texas Archery JOAD club of Victoria.
Under steamy and sunny skies after a drought breaking torrent earlier in the week, the 2006 TSAA state JOAD championships were conducted in Victoria. The unseasonably lights winds yielded 18 new or tied state records from the 43 archers. Benjamin Human, Meagan Lesak, Holly Heinsohn, Clayton DeBord and Logan Measels each broke one record. Bryce Wickliff broke two records. Kayla DeBord grabbed three and Tyler Janota and Andrea Garner each had four apiece.
Funny thing, we had to move the field three times on Friday due to wet grounds. We finally settled on a spot and got the field lined. As I am walking off the field I notice a Kildeer walking around with the broke wing routine which means there is a nest close by. After about 10 minutes of looking we find it. About 35 meters from the shooting line in lane 12 (of 15).
So, we paint a big circle around it and put some flagging tape on some spikes and add another lane, eliminating lane 12. Long story short is that she and her nest survived the weekend although she might like a good glass of wine this evening. There were many pictures taken of the bird.
Bad thing today is we had three kids get heat exhaustion and one bent over to get the clipboard and parted her hair (and some of her head) with an arrow in the target. With three ends to go, I called time out, made the concession water and gatorade free and told everyone to drink one before we would resume shooting.
Oh, one other funny story. Wyatt Misenhiemer had mentioned at Indoor Nationals that the judges wanted more of the archers to work out close arrows among themselves rather than making the judge the bad guy. So, I told all the kids that I really shouldn't be walking around a lot calling arrows and that I would be very thirsty after a walk like that. So, if I had to come and call an arrow, the archer that thought the arrow was some value other than what I determined would have to buy me a drink. I got no drinks on day one. On day two a couple thought I was joking, only to find I wasn't and they had to pay up. One called me over and by the time I explained the situation on loser pays, all four archers had changed the minds to the other side leaving me in the same situation as when I arrived. They finally agreed without me getting involved. As usual the kids have a great time.
